Beth Smith’s work is a collection of Polaroids that combine the portrait and text. Smith takes a straight, relaxed portrait and then asks the sitter to write, with a pen of their choice, a secret or insecurity something that they would not ordinarily share. She takes the sitter out of their comfort zone with the idea of sharing something and it instantly being linked to their image and then gives back the control by allowing the sitter to write on it how they wish. Smith’s work is a participatory piece, so during the course of the exhibition she will be asking visitors to join in and help to expand the collection.
